"Truth is like cod liver oil; it tastes bitter and no one wants it. So you make them laugh, and while their mouths are open, you pour it down their throat." - Harold Clurman
"Born Yesterday" is a scathing comedy about the idealism visualized in the United States Constitution corrupted by greed, ignorance, self-service, and disillusion shortly after World War II.
The self-made millionaire, Harry Brock, has thieved his way up the ladder to purchasing Senators. Paul Verral, an international journalist, sidles his way into Brock's new Washington D.C. circle, endearing himself to the criminal who hires Paul to class up his main squeeze: a "showgirl" of great beauty and no desire to behave properly among the stuffed shirts, nor the effort needed to think.
Without altering text or era, Theatre9/12 re-interprets this hysterical play paralleling today's events.
Since 2008, the 501(c)3 Theatre9/12 - Actor Development has facilitated these actor-produced plays where every ticket is "pay-what-you-can-afford" without intimidating "suggested donation." Every penny over expenses is divided among cast and crew only.
At Theatre9/12, trained and working actors, both union and non-union, continue to develop their talents and skills through Master Classes and performances. As well, all students pay whatever they can afford. Their passions climax with productions presented through the Actors' Equity Association Members' Project Code or their own similar contract which our staff assists these actors in making these projects come to life.
All performances at Trinity Parish Hall, 609 8th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104

Based on the popular film in the 80s, Heathers The Musical: High School Edition is a story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, Veronica falls in love with the new kid J.D. who has a dark past. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and kiss Heather's butt. but J.D. has another plan for that bullet. Heathers The Musical: High School Edition is a black comedy that deals with a variety of topics that maybe upsetting or triggering. While some of the language has been altered from the original version for teen actors and audiences, the characters, issues, and the plot is exactly the same. Please make sure to visit our website YouthTheatre.org ahead to time to determine if this is suitable for you/your child to see.
Content note: Please be advised that Heathers includes explicit language, the use of a smoke machine, handguns, simulated gunshots and explosions, and depictions of suicide and school violence.
YTN has taken appropriate measures to discuss these issues with the actors involved in the production as well as looking out for their mental health in the process so that everyone feels comfortable performing the show. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Artistic Director (and the director of this production), Mimi Katano at mimi@youththeare.org.

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence. and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however - the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!
Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, Matilda Jr. is a joyous kid-power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.
Audience members are required to remain masked while indoors at YTN.
For roles with multiple actors, casting for each performance will be announced by April 5th.
